Day 1 2019/03/21
There were so many great pictures from this trip that I decided to split them up into four galleries. One for each day of the trip. Many, if not most, of these great pictures were taken by Pearl.

Rolling through the Triangle Of Doom in Omotesando. It isn’t as dire as it sounds. It is actually a fairly safe place in a very busy intersection. Though it feels very exposed it is a place drivers avoid because of the painted lines.

Schwalbe Marathon Plus tires (back wheel) reflect light making them very visible. A half dozen spoke reflectors can be bought for a 100 yen and they look kind of cool.

Tokyo Bay is a working harbor. The cranes that unload cargo ships are lit up at night.

The Rainbow Bridge is lit up nicely at night and you get a good view of it as the ferry goes under it.

Across the road from the zoo and Oshima Park is the Tsubaki (Camellias) Park. Oshima is famous for its long history of cultivating camellia flowers. We were able to attend the Camellia festival. There were very few people there and many of the types of the camellias were done blossoming.

Paul’s crank snapped in two just as we were about to leave the campground.

Paul does his best to pedal with one foot. He tied his foot to the pedal so that he could pull the pedal up on the upstroke. The road was carved out of the rock. The layers of sediment and lava debris can be clearly seen.

Izu Islands are also served by high speed jet foil ferries. They can make the trip to Oshima Island in less than2 hours but they don’t allow bicycles.

The residents gave the ferry a grand send off. I don’t think this is a normal event. Since the new school year was about to begin I think it was students and parents bidding bon voyage to their recent high school graduates as they go off to college.

Some people bag their bicycles so they can carry them on public transportation. It is only way to carry a bicycle on most trains and ships.

In order to bag your bicycle you have to partially dismantle them. It is a hassle and isn’t practical for touring.
